Welcome to St. Augustine Scenic Cruise!
For over a century, the St. Augustine Scenic Cruise has been offering visitors a one-of-a-kind way to experience the rich history and natural beauty of St. Augustine from the water. Established in the early 1900s, this family-operated business gives passengers a unique perspective of the city’s iconic landmarks, while providing a relaxing journey along the beautiful waters of Matanzas Bay.
The Usina Family Legacy
The origins of the St. Augustine Scenic Cruise date back to the 18th century, when the Usina family first settled in St. Augustine. The Usinas were part of a group of settlers from the island of Minorca, located off the coast of Spain, who arrived in St. Augustine in 1777. Many of their descendants still reside in the city today, continuing the family’s long-standing connection to the area.
In 1900, Captain Frank Usina and his wife, Catherine, found themselves unable to return to Miami, where Frank had been working as a carpenter on the Miami train station, due to an outbreak of yellow fever. As a result, they settled in North Beach, an area that was only accessible by boat at the time.

The Birth of the Usina Boat Business
Soon after settling in North Beach, Frank and Catherine were approached by Henry Flagler, the famous developer responsible for transforming Florida’s east coast. Flagler, who had built the Ponce de Leon Hotel (now Flagler College) and the Alcazar Hotel (now the Lightner Museum), requested that the Usinas host oyster roasts for his guests. These gatherings, which included Minorcan-style dinners, live music, dancing, and scenic boat rides along Matanzas Bay, quickly became a popular attraction for the well-to-do visitors of Flagler’s hotels.
Recognizing the growing demand for these outings, Captain Frank Usina expanded his boat service, initially using a chartered launch to ferry guests to and from North Beach. As his business flourished, Frank came across a 45-foot boat stranded on a mud bar. He repaired and restored the vessel, christening it the Victory, which became the flagship of his fleet. Frank continued at the helm, offering guests not only transportation but also a scenic and entertaining journey through the waters of St. Augustine.
A Century of Scenic Cruises
Over the years, the St. Augustine Scenic Cruise has remained a beloved attraction, passed down through the generations of the Usina family. Today, the cruise still provides the same spectacular views of St. Augustine’s historic landmarks, including the Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine Lighthouse, and Bridge of Lions, all while immersing passengers in the breathtaking natural surroundings of Matanzas Bay.
